1 kgReal Good Chicken, Whole
1 largecoconut
3 tbspoil
2 (1” piece)cinnamon
2 tspfennel seeds
1 cup curry leaves
3 large
(60 gm)
onions, sliced finely
3 tspginger-garlic paste
3 tspchilly powder
3 tspcoriander powder
½ tspturmeric powder
3 largetomatoes, chopped
As requiredsalt
1marble sized ball tamarind
Here is a delectable recipe for Kozhi Vartha Kozhambu (Chettinad Chicken Curry).
  • Step 01

    Clean chicken, cut into 12-14 pieces and wash thoroughly. Extract 1 ½ cups of thick milk from grated coconut and 1 ½ cups of thin milk.
  • Step 02

    Heat oil in a heavy vessel and season with cinnamon and fennel seeds. Add the curry leaves, sauté and add onions.
  • Step 03

    When they turn golden brown, add ginger-garlic paste, chilly, coriander powder, and turmeric. Sauté for 2 minutes, add chopped tomatoes, and stir fry till tomatoes are well blended.
  • Step 04

    Add chicken pieces and salt and sauté till oil rises on the top.
  • Step 05

    Pour the thin milk over the chicken, and cook covered on low heat.
  • Step 06

    When the chicken is tender, add the thick coconut milk, and the thick juice extracted from the tamarind.
  • Step 07

    Simmer for 5 minutes, and remove from heat.
  • Step 08

    Serve hot with steamed rice, tomato rice or chapattis.
